Alcohol Abuse Essay Sample
Alcohol addiction is a mental illness that belongs to the category of behavioral disorders. It is not a bad habit, but a disease that is in the competence of psychiatrists and narcologists. It is a chronic, progressive, and incurable disease that requires professional assistance and complementary treatment to avoid its development. However, it is necessary not only to request professional assistance but also to have a sincere desire to be cured of this disease and minimize its effect on personal life.
It is impossible to recover from alcohol addiction. One can achieve remission - a condition in which the craving for alcohol weakens or disappears. If a person understands that alcohol is contraindicated for them, they can live peacefully until old age. As long as a person thinks that he can return to alcohol's normal consumption, nothing will work, as they will break down again and again. If a person is deprived of the substance they are dependent on, they can live a long and happy life, and no problems arise. However, if the person is trying to learn how to drink a little bit, this is a vicious circle.
Alcohol abuse is a progressive disease, which means that there are several stages of its development. Nowadays, three stages officially exist; however, with time, somatic symptoms also appear. In the first stage, uncontrollable craving and mental dependence on alcohol develop. On the second one, the level of fatigue rises, and efficiency decreases. At this stage, people usually go into binges for several days. The third stage is characterized by a malfunction of the internal organs of the liver, heart, and brain, which complicates the treatment process and can lead to death after some time. Nevertheless, deaths may appear even in the earliest stages. For example, delirium, or delirium tremens may appear— metal-alcohol psychosis that is expressed by delusions caused by visual, auditory, and/or tactile hallucinations. It often occurs in the second stage of the disease with prolonged binge drinking. Delirium can lead to cerebral edema and, thus, death. In general, the disease is severe in terms of progressive mental disorders and physical complications.
Despite an obvious progression, people may find it difficult to understand that they have problems with alcohol. Many face "anosognosia", that is, the lack of understanding of their disease. This is a common occurrence in alcohol addiction. It is present at various stages, including the one when only a pathological attraction appears, that is, craving. The person still does not have a hangover; any complications, physical health is perfect. However, the person is already starting to continually look for the related activities, companies, reasons to drink. There is also such a symptom when the addict gets into the company and wants to get drunk faster. Usually, a person finds an excuse for this craving: "I wanted to," "it was a holiday," or "it was necessary to drink for it." It also happens that people in the third stage, when they have cirrhosis, memory impairment, seizures, continue to think that they drink like everyone else. Such an idea takes place because the brain can no longer critically perceive reality. At the same time, if a person has doubts about the relationship with alcohol, it is better not to delay, but to try to contact a specialist. It is often challenging to rely on one's own feelings. There is a fine line between normal use and the initial stage of addiction.
Modern medicine does not specify the exact reasons for alcohol abuse. It is not correct to highlight the importance of one reason and neglect others because a person at the age of 18 may start drinking because of the relationship problems and not stop. This disease is multifactorial — there are genetic predispositions and many provoking factors, both social and psychological. In adolescent alcoholism, it is especially evident: if the family and parents are dependent, then the probability is very high, about 80%, that the teenager starts drinking too. Firstly, there is a genetic burden, and secondly, a teenager sees a family model, which they take as an example, as there is no alternative to check.
At the same time, it is enough to have a willingness to be treated from alcohol abuse to succeed. As long as a person does not have the motivation for recovery, such as internal, real, the results are usually not very good. If the addict, on the contrary, has the high intrinsic motivation, then they can be cured without the help of doctors and psychologists. The groups of Alcoholics Anonymous are an excellent example in this regard. People who have not drunk themselves for several years gather there and help others not drink. This assistance program has proven its effectiveness; however, only a few people choose it. The rest prefer to work with professionals from clinics or use the most straightforward ways, the efficiency of which has never been proven. In addition, sometimes the medication stage is necessary to remove complications, get out of the binge, remove pathological attraction for the first time, and then use such groups as a major tool for treatment.
Alcoholism is a mental disorder that manifests itself as an uncontrolled urge to drink alcohol. It is a disease that destroys an individual and a family, breaks social ties, and knocks a person out of public life. Alcohol abuse leads to intellectual degradation, disrupts metabolism, and provokes many diseases of internal organs. An alcoholic is always an unhappy person who is satisfied only with the next dose of alcohol. However, regardless of the severity of the problem, there is always a possibility of recovering and staying in the remission stage.
